 Synopsis/History

Based on the famous fairy tale, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical Cinderella was one of the last shows the famous duo wrote together, and was the first they wrote directly for television.  First broadcast live in 1957 on CBS starring Julie Andrews, this black & white production was well received.  In 1965 with color television coming into wide use, CBS remade the production starring 17 year-old Leslie Ann Warren and Stuart Damon (General Hospital’s Alan Quartermaine) as the Prince.  It was adapted to the stage but never made it to Broadway, but has been done by countless professional, community, school, and touring productions.  In 2013 with a updated libretto (script) it finally made its Broadway debut closing in 2015.  ABC in 1997 did an updated television version with Brady playing the title role.

While the plot is well known by almost any child, Rodgers & Hammerstein sought to retain this familiar story line.  This is NOT Disney animated feature film version, but a completely different version. They had a goal to humanize the characters with more believable and realistic portrayals. For example, the “fairy” aspect of story is de-emphasized as in the case of the Godmother who is portrayed as Cinderella’s actual Godmother, a woman with a sense of humor, who just happens to have magical powers.  Or the Queen is only wants her son to find happiness and companionship.  As a result, their Cinderella is more of an adult love story while retaining much of the “magic” which makes it a fairy tale favorite.
