New Perspectives Website Renovation - July 2010

A long overdue renovation of the New Perspectives website should be completed by August.  The improvements should ease and improve site navigation as well as improve the look and feel of the New Perspectives website.

The original site was developed in 1998 when dial-up access to the internet was the norm, web hosting space was very limited, and computer display resolutions were only 600 x 480 or 800 x 600 pixels.  As a result the web site images were displayed as thumbnails in the galleries and exhibits then linked to web pages where the larger images were displayed.

In the renovated website, the images in the galleries or exhibits are are generally about 400 x 600  pixels at 100dpi in JPEG format using about 80-85% compression resulting in an average image size is around 100KB.  Thumbnails leading to individual image pages have been eliminated in favor of directly displaying a collection of images in each gallery or exhibit.  The display resolution has been expanded to be best viewed in 1280 x 720 to 1366 x 768 widescreen format.  Some low-resolution legacy images do remain in some of the galleries or exhibits from my pre-digital film work until the original negatives can be rescanned.

The JAVA navigation buttons in the side navigation bar have been replaced by simple HTML buttons.  JAVA is still used for the Home Page slide show and page transitions but otherwise no other JAVA or JAVASCRIPT is used on the site.  The site is fully usable if JAVA is not installed or blocked on individual computers.  To use these features select "Allow Blocked Content" on the information bar when it appears.

The Flora & Fauna Gallery has been separated into two galleries, and exhibits are being expanding within the galleries.  Throughout the site a darker background was selected to improve image viewing contrast.  It is now easier to add images to the various galleries so more frequent updates of new images will now be possible.
